How to extend vocal range? part I

Before reading on, I must warn you that you will NEED a real certified SLS teacher to teach you vocal technique.  He/She will design a vocal exercise for you. It will be safe and  successful. There's no such thing as a shortcut.   It will be tremendously dangerous and difficult to do it alone and  this is solely a general little tip and not SLS technique teaching in public and cannot guarantee an outcome in self-training. Me and Octave 28 will NOT take any responsibility.

This is such a long story, an epic!! but it will just guide you through the day when you absolutely can't be having a session with a certified vocal teacher.

I call it... a little cheat...

Do you know where your larynx is??  Touch your adam's apple and feel it moving while you're swallowing and feel it stays rather still while speaking.   That's kinda where your larynx is!

Now! Feel your larynx while you sing! I think it probably moves up more or less and in the same time Gosh! What a coincident! your voice seems to crack, or flat, or disappears!!

Theoretically and practically, if you can get your larynx to stay still as your speaking voice (and a balanced of vocal cord adduction), then you will have an easier time singing!    True though!!

Try yawning with sound! ( well...you might as well yawn ,now, anyway) That's when your larynx goes down deeper.  That's what you need to do to keep it still in order to extend your range. Well...one of the factors ...and important one, too...

Since you're not here with me face to face otherwise I will just lead you to it via an "especially for you" vocal exercise... Anyway...

K folks!  what you feel during yawning , is exactly, what you need to feel when you stabilize your larynx.    Now sing with the same feeling like that! So you need to really be observant with yourself i.e how your tongue, throat, vocal cord area, etc feel.  If you ever find yourself lost, imitate yawning again like   "HUH" . Then put the particular consonant you're singing into it together such as a consonant B + Huh (if you're singing book) ,etc.   You can try with any consonant. Anything really...

Feel good right?   Easier and all!

This will just give you an example of how to survive through that word.   Again! This will not fix any of your real problem. You NEED a REAL coach to guide you, to trick you into having a new habit. This is all about changing your old vocal habit which did you harm.

Putting a consonant in front of HUH is not enough to sing "book" I hear ya.  They are completely different vowels.   I will talk about vowels later!

Cheers
